          Matching Rules and Duplicate Rules for Contacts and Person Accounts

          When you run a referral program, customers and their referred friends often try to sign up with the brand more than one time. When a new customer signs up with the brand and joins a referral promotion, a Contact record is created for the customer. Each time a referred friend signs up with the brand, a Contact record and a Person Account record is created for the friend. Create duplicate rules and matching rules to avoid creating duplicate contacts and person accounts for customers and their referred friends if they try to sign up more than one time.

          Duplicate Rule and Matching Rule Configuration

          In the Referral Marketing org, create two matching rules for Contact and Person Account. In the criteria for both matching rules, select Email as the field and Exact as the match method. After you create the matching rules, create two duplicate rules for Contact and Person Account. Relate the duplicate rules to their corresponding matching rules. The duplicate rules and their corresponding matching rules together prevent customers and their friends from signing up with the brand multiple times by using the same email address.

          You can also add actions and alert text that informs the person who is trying to sign up that they already have a contact with the brand.

          Tip
          Tip If your brand wants to run additional checks before creating Contact and Person Account records, you can add the checks in the matching rules and duplicate rules.

          Matching Rule and Duplicate Rule Use

          Here’s how Referral Marketing automatically uses the matching rules and the duplicate rules that you create:

          • The Refer A Friend widget and the Advocate Enrollment Business API check whether a customer is trying to sign up with the brand when they already have a contact.
          • The Referral Event Business API and the Referral Event action check whether:
            • An advocate is trying to refer the same friend multiple times
            • A referred friend with a Contact record and a Person Account record is trying to sign up with the brand multiple times
