          Sandbox Data Storage Upgrades

          Sandbox Data Storage Upgrades

Upgrade the data storage of new or existing Developer or Developer Pro sandboxes, which supports developing and testing with larger data sets.

          Required Editions

Available in: both Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience
Available in: Professional, Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited, and Database.com Editions
          User Permissions Needed
To view a sandbox: View Setup and Configuration
To create, refresh, activate, and delete a sandbox: Manage Dev Sandboxes (Developer or Developer Pro only) or Manage Sandboxes (all sandbox types)

The current data storage limits for Developer and Developer Pro sandboxes don’t always provide enough flexibility for developers who are building solutions that require larger amounts of data. By default, Developer sandboxes have 200 MB of storage, while Developer Pro sandboxes have 1 GB of storage. This lack of storage can block your development and testing work. When storage begins to run out, you either have to clean up your sandbox manually by deleting data, or upgrade to a higher license type. With extra storage, you can spend more time developing innovations for your customers and less time deleting data to free up space in your developer sandboxes.

          Note
Note Not available for Partial Copy and Full sandboxes.

          What Counts Against Data Storage?

Entities defined as Metadata Types are not storage counted in any org, including sandboxes. Everything else is storage counted. See Salesforce Help: Data and File Storage Allocations to see what counts against data and file storage.

          How Do Storage Upgrades Work?

Sandbox data storage upgrades enable you to double the data storage to 400 MB for Developer sandboxes, or 2 GB for Developer Pro sandboxes. Sandbox storage upgrades are fixed values and can’t be modified by Salesforce Customer Support. You can apply only one storage upgrade per sandbox.

To upgrade a sandbox’s storage, you must have an available storage upgrade license. Here are the options for applying a storage upgrade:

          • Creating or refreshing a sandbox: Sandboxes Setup page
          • Upgrading storage for an existing sandbox: Sandbox Detail page

A cloned sandbox always contains the same amount of storage as the source sandbox. If a source sandbox has additional storage, then the cloned sandbox has additional storage. If a storage upgrade isn’t available, then you can’t clone the sandbox.

How Many Storage Upgrades Will I Get?

If you purchase a sandbox add-on, you get the same number of storage upgrade licenses as Developer sandboxes. Existing customers automatically get storage upgrade licenses provisioned to their production orgs. If you’re a Communications Cloud, Media Cloud, or Energy and Utilities Cloud customer, you can contact Salesforce Support to request additional storage upgrade licenses. You can use the storage upgrade license to increase storage for either a Developer or Developer Pro sandbox.

Add-On Number of Developer Sandboxes Number of Storage Upgrade Licenses
          Developer Pro 5 5
          Partial Copy 10 10
          Full 15 15

Can I Manage Sandbox Storage Using the API?

Yes. You can manage storage upgrades programmatically using Tooling API.

          • SandboxInfo (create or refresh)
          • SandboxProcess (post-creation)

Can I Add Data Storage to an Existing Sandbox?

Yes, if you have an available storage upgrade. From Setup, find and select Sandboxes. Click the sandbox name to open the Sandbox Details page, then click Edit.

Can I Upgrade Storage for a Cloned Sandbox?

Not when you initially clone it. A cloned sandbox always contains the same amount of storage as the source sandbox, whether you’re creating it or refreshing an existing cloned sandbox. The Sandboxes Setup page preselects the storage option that matches the source sandbox; consequently, you can’t upgrade or downgrade storage. If you clone a sandbox with a storage upgrade, the cloned sandbox also has upgraded storage.

After you clone the sandbox, you can edit it to add a storage upgrade, if available.

If you don’t have an available storage upgrade license, you can’t clone a sandbox with upgraded storage, or add storage to it after cloning. Contact your Salesforce account executive to purchase additional sandboxes and storage add-ons.

          Can I Downgrade Storage?

No, you can’t downgrade storage in an existing sandbox. For non-cloned sandboxes, you can free up a storage upgrade license by selecting the default data storage capacity during a sandbox refresh. However, you can’t change the storage for a cloned sandbox during creation or refresh.

During a refresh, any work performed in the existing sandbox is lost. Be sure to back up any important data you want to retain, and then you can reimport it after the refresh.

Where Can I See How Many Storage Upgrades Are Available?

When you create or refresh a sandbox, you can see how many upgrade licenses are used and remaining next to the Upgrade Storage button. When editing a sandbox, if you have available upgrade licenses, you can see this information next to the Upgrade Storage button. If you don’t have any storage upgrades, the button is hidden.

How Can I Obtain Additional Storage Upgrades?

If you’re a Communications Cloud, Media Cloud, or Energy and Utilities Cloud customer, you can contact Salesforce Support to request additional storage upgrade licenses. For all other customers, contact your Salesforce account executive to purchase additional sandboxes and storage add-ons.
