Gift Designations in Nonprofit
A gift designation is a fund that represents a specific purpose for a gift, such as an earthquake relocation fund and a fund for after-school care in an underserved community. Quickly allocate incoming donations to specific funds with gift designations.

Select the gift designations to associate with gift commitments, campaigns, and opportunities so that all related incoming gifts are automatically allocated to these designations. For gifts that require multiple designations, define the percentage of each allocation. These allocations are called Gift Default Designations. Every gift requires at least one allocated designation.
By default, a gift transaction inherits the gift default designations defined in the associated gift commitment, if any. You can also allocate a new gift designation or override existing allocations for gift transactions. These allocations are called Gift Transaction Designations.
Only one gift designation can act as the org-wide default. However, processing a high number of records on a designation can cause data skew. To prevent this issue, create default designations, as necessary, based on the volume of records processed on the designation. If you change the org-wide default designation, existing gift allocations are unaffected. Only new allocations use the updated org-wide default designation.
Fundraising provides an automated, efficient, and accurate way to reconcile donations with designations. Based on the allocations, data across the gift entry, gift commitment, gift transaction, and gift designation records is synchronized to provide accurate impact reporting to donors. A gift transaction designation is the source of truth for updating gift designation record rollups.

If gift default designations or gift transaction designations aren’t defined, then the gift amounts are automatically allocated to the org-wide designation. If the total percentage of allocations at any hierarchical level is less than 100%, then the remaining percentage is also allocated to the org-wide designation.
Gift Default Designation Inheritance Hierarchy
Gift default designations are inherited from these sources, in the order of their availability.
- The opportunity associated with the commitment
- The campaign associated with the commitment
- The org-wide default designation
Gift Transaction Designation Inheritance Hierarchy for Transactions Created During Gift Entry
Gift transaction designations are inherited from the gift default designations defined for these sources, in the order of their availability.
- The campaign associated with the gift transaction
- The commitment
- The opportunity associated with the commitment
- The campaign associated with the commitment
- The org-wide default designation
Gift Transaction Designation Inheritance Hierarchy for Gift Entries
For one-time gift entries, the default gift transaction designations are inherited from the campaign, if available. Otherwise, the gift amounts are allocated to the org-wide default designation during gift processing.
For gift entries associated with a matched commitment, the default gift transaction designations are inherited from these sources, in the order of their availability.
- Gift transaction designations defined for the selected gift transaction
- Gift default designations that are defined for:
- The campaign associated with the gift transaction
- The matching commitment
- The opportunity associated with the matching commitment
- The campaign associated with the matching commitment
- The org-wide default designation
Note If you override the campaign when you create the gift entry, then gift entry's gift default designations are inherited and the hierarchical logic doesn't apply.
