Automate Recurring Donation Status Changes
Automate Recurring Donation Status changes when donors miss installment payments.
Sometimes donors miss their Recurring Donation installment payments, or stop donating entirely. Track these events on Recurring Donations so you and your staff know when there's a lapse in giving.
In NPSP Settings, configure the Recurring Donation Status to change automatically when donations aren't received as expected. Let's follow an example scenario and walk through how to make these configuration changes.
Your development director decides that recurring gifts should:
-
Be marked as lapsed if the donor doesn't make their scheduled donation for 20 days.
-
Automatically close if a donor doesn't make their scheduled donation for 45 days.
In NPSP Settings:
-
Click .
-
Click Edit.
-
Enter 20 in Number of Days for Lapsed.
-
Enter 45 in Number of Days for Closed.
-
Save these settings.
Now you may be wondering, exactly when do these status updates occur? How does NPSP define a missed installment payment? Let's look at a specific gift for an example. Let's say we have a monthly donation started on June 1st, but the donor doesn't make their scheduled July payment.
Salesforce begins counting Number of Days for Lapsed and Number of Days for Closed on the day after the expected installment date (July 2nd in our example). So the Recurring Donation is marked Lapsed 20 days later, on July 22nd, and marked Closed 45 days later, on August 16th.
There certainly are a lot of dates to keep track of here! To help you check your understanding of these settings, we've provided a table of additional examples.
| Number of Days for Lapsed | Number of Days for Closed | Lapsed Status Date | Closed Status Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 20 | July 12th | July 22nd |
| 30 | 45 | August 1st | August 16th |
| 60 | 90 | August 31st | September 30th |
Each example represents a monthly donation initiated on June 1st.
