How do I use the Data Import Wizard to update records that match specified Salesforce IDs?
You can use the Data Import Wizard to update leads, contacts, or accounts using the record’s ID as the unique identifier. These steps don’t apply to custom objects.
After you have prepared the data and updated the report, import the CSV file into Salesforce. The steps vary based on the records you're updating.

Prepare the Data
Before you begin, prepare the data you're updating.
- Create a tabular report for the records you're updating, including the record ID and the fields you're updating.
- Save the report locally as a .csv file for backup purposes.
- To create a version of the .csv file and make your changes to the data, click Save As.
- Click Save.
Update Leads
- From Setup, enter Data Import Wizard in the Quick Find box, then select Data Import Wizard.
- Click Launch Wizard.
- Select Leads, then select Update existing records.
- Set Match Lead by to Salesforce.com ID.
- Select the CSV file that contains your import data, and click Next.
- Map the Lead ID field to the Lead ID column in your CSV file, and map the other fields.
- Click Next.
- Review the import settings, and then click Start Import.
Update Accounts or Contacts
- From Setup, enter Data Import Wizard in the Quick Find box, then select Data Import Wizard.
- Click Launch Wizard.
- Select Accounts and Contacts, then select Update existing records.
- Set Match Contact by to Salesforce.com ID.
- Set Match Account by to Salesforce.com ID.
- Select Update existing Account information.
- Select the CSV file that contains your import data, and click Next.
- Map the contact ID, phone, and address fields to the relevant columns in your CSV file.
- Map the account ID and other fields to the relevant columns in your CSV file.
- Click Next.
- Review the import settings, and then click Start Import.
The Data Import Wizard matches the record IDs in your file with the record IDs in Salesforce and updates the fields that were mapped.
