Give Users Access to Lightning Experience

Give Users Access to Lightning Experience

When you’re ready to go live with Lightning Experience, it’s not necessary to enable or otherwise turn on the interface. Instead, simply make sure that the appropriate users have access via the Lightning Experience User permission. If you’re rolling out Lightning Experience in phases, set up access for the users in your first group (and so on). If you’re doing a “big bang” rollout, set up access for everyone in your org.

          Required Editions

Available in: both Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic
Available in: Professional, Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited, and Developer Editions
          User Permissions Needed
To edit profiles and permission sets: Manage Profiles and Permission Sets
          Note
Note The Lightning Experience User permission has been on by default in all standard Salesforce profiles since the “Turn on Lightning Experience” critical update was activated in January 2020. Users with standard profiles already have access to Lightning Experience.

Since the critical update went into effect, users with a custom profile that was cloned from a standard profile automatically get Lightning Experience access. This is because cloned custom profiles inherit the Lightning Experience User permission from standard profiles. If you turned off the Lightning Experience User permission in cloned custom profiles after the critical update, remember to turn it back on when you’re ready.

To give Lightning Experience access to users with custom profiles:

          1. In Setup, in the Quick Find box, enter Users, and then select Profiles.
          2. Edit the custom profiles assigned to users who should have Lightning Experience access.
          3. In the Administrative Permissions section, select the Lightning Experience User checkbox.
          4. Save your change.
          Tip
Tip If you have experience with Data Loader, save time by updating many profiles at once. But remember, with great power comes great responsibility. Take care you don’t inadvertently enable or disable other features. See Data Loader in Salesforce Help.

Want to roll out Lightning Experience to a subset of custom profile users without giving access to everyone assigned to the profile? Create a permission set that includes the Lightning Experience User permission. Then apply the permission set to the desired users. See Create Permission Sets, Enable User Permissions in Permission Sets, and Manage Permission Set Assignments in Salesforce Help.

If you’re limiting Lightning Experience to a subset of your users, try to keep all members of a functional team on the same experience. If you have team members who often share links and work closely together, include them all in the same rollout group. See Gotchas If Users Switch Between Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic in Salesforce Help.
